The Insulin Index: Why Blood Sugar Spikes Destroy Fat Loss

The Physiology of Insulin and Lipolysis
Insulin is an immensely powerful anabolic hormone secreted by the beta cells of the pancreatic islets of Langerhans in response to elevated blood glucose. Furthermore, chronic hyperinsulinemia leads to the downregulation of insulin receptors, a state known as insulin resistance. This perpetuates a vicious cycle: the pancreas secretes more insulin to achieve the same glucose-lowering effect, meaning the suppression of lipolysis becomes a near-permanent state throughout the day.

A landmark study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation demonstrated that insulin completely suppresses adipose tissue lipolysis at physiological concentrations, highlighting its absolute dominance over fat mobilisation. Another compelling dataset from The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition established the concept of the insulin index, showing that certain protein-rich foods can elicit insulin responses comparable to carbohydrate-rich foods, fundamentally changing how we approach macronutrient timing and fat loss.
